A deep knock that rises with engine speed usually means worn rod or main bearings. Keep driving it and the damage spreads to the crankshaft.
Blue smoke, oil disappearing between changes or oil-fouled spark plugs point to worn piston rings or valve seals.
A compression or leak-down test that shows weak cylinders means the rings, valves or head gasket are no longer sealing.
An oil pressure warning at idle once the engine is warm can mean worn bearings or a tired oil pump.
Milky oil, or oil in the coolant reservoir, can mean a failed head gasket or a cracked head. Fix it before it damages the bearings.
An engine that has been badly overheated or has spun a bearing usually needs a full teardown to see what can be saved.
