The 3-valve 5.4 V8 in 2004 to 2010 F-150s and Expeditions is known for worn cam phasers, timing chain guides and tensioners.
The 3.5 EcoBoost can stretch its timing chains, especially with long oil change intervals.
The non-turbo 3.5 and 3.7 V6 in the Explorer, Edge, Flex and Taurus use a water pump inside the engine, driven by the timing chain. When it leaks, coolant can get into the oil.
Common on the 4.6 and 5.4 V8s. The leak makes a tick that is loudest on a cold start and fades as the engine warms.
Worn coils and plugs cause misfires on Ford V8s and EcoBoosts. Early 5.4 3-valve plugs can break during removal, which takes the right tools and patience.
Failed blend door actuators and refrigerant leaks are common on Ford trucks and SUVs.

No. Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) lets you have maintenance and repairs done at any shop, so keep your receipts. Repairs covered by the factory warranty itself are still handled by the dealer.
